Before the invention of writing

Before the invention of writing, the only way humans had to communicate was face to face. There was no way to share knowledge until people could meet in a lifetime and speak their native language. A language is not only vocabulary and syntax. It carries culture, worldview and the history of a society in its names for places and things. The language that expresses an idea is a part of the idea itself.
